This section presents the three analytical tools at the heart of our proposed approach to the study of genocide. Firstly, the legal definition of genocide enables us to understand the various forms of genocide and the conditions for its recognition. The genocidal process framework enables us to understand the stages leading up to genocide, through the study of the actions of the genocidaires and their effects on the victims. Finally, the racist ideologies behind cases of genocide and their manifestations within society help us to understand the role played by racism in this process.
The “information sheets” section provides a brief presentation of seven concepts whose understanding can support case study work.
